Small Update!

Ohai guise!

Sorry for disappearing on you guys, but some real life stuff just got the better of me and I've had tons of work to do with almost no spare time to keep my blog of decent quality. This also means I haven't been able to watch much lately, so updating was pretty much pointless. Things seem to have calmed down again now so I plan to post here a little more often again, keep an eye out for more movies and series to watch (or avoid)! :3

#7 Constantine

Another movie starring Keanu Reeves as the lead role. Constantine is an action horror film in which the main character, John Constantine, has the ability to see half-angels and half-demons that roam the living world in their true form. Due to a suicide attempt in his youth John is damned to go to Hell once he dies. He became an excorcist who sends demons that roam the living world back to Hell hoping he can "earn" his spot in Heaven this way. One case however turns out to be part of a much darker plan and John gets wrapped up in the middle of it and needs to find a way to put an end to it.

This is basically an everyday horror/fantasy movie with a fair amount of biblic references. If you're a fan of the genre like me then it's definitely worth a watch but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not big on the fantasy films. The movie is classified as horror but it's not really scary and the scares don't hold up against the more obvious or popular choices if you want to watch some horror.

#6 Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Sherlock Holmes is a 2009 action film about one of the world's most known fictional detectives. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as his trusted sidekick, Dr. Watson.
Holmes and Watson investigate a series of murders that seem to be connected to some occult tribe performing sacrifices and rituals. The entire movie is somewhat shrouded in mystery and even features some magic which makes it even more exciting to watch and you actually become curious yourself how Holmes will find an explanation for everything that's happening or has happened.

This was another movie recommended to me by a friend and I'm glad that he did. I enjoyed the film and I thought Downey's performance of Holmes was just plain awesome. I also assume that any fan of fighting sports/martial arts will enjoy the fight scenes, although these are limited and I would've liked to see more of them. For some reason I also enjoyed the music/soundtrack a lot while this isn't something I usually pay a lot of attention to while watching. So thumbs up there as well.

A sequel, called Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, is currently in production so I'll be sure to watch and review that one as well once I get a chance to!

#5 Vanilla Sky

Wait, what?

I just got done watching this and I have to say I'm a bit overwhelmed. I started watching it with low expectations and was proven severely wrong. This is one of those movies you have to watch for yourself to decide whether you like it or not though. I thought it was very confusing but I enjoyed watching the plot unfold. It has an excellent cast with Tom Cruise having the lead role and others like Cameron Diaz & Penelope Cruz. The film's a mix between several different genres and I think that's all I want to say about it without giving away too much. I'd definitely recommend it if you feel like watching something deeper than your casual every day movie with no meaning or message.

#4 The Lake House

Average but decent movie.

The Lakehouse is a romantical drama film, starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. The movie features time travel in the form of a mailbox and tells the story from two points of view. On one side we have Keanu who is an architect living in the year 2004 while Sandra plays a doctor living in 2006. They can communicate with each other through letters which are sent back and forth through time via the mailbox from a lake house, a house both of them lived in at separate points in time.

Though not my usual pick of genre I have to say that I enjoyed this movie. It's primarily about the two main characters developping a romantical interest for each other though, so don't expect too much sci-fi time travel stuff.

Comedy film suggestions

After watching Vampires Suck (review below) I realised that eventhough there are a lot of comedy films around, a majority of those are actually not that funny and often disappointing. That's why this blog I'll introduce you to some movies I actually thought funny and that are worth watching if you're looking for something in the genre. This is obviously also a matter of personal taste, so feel free to disagree with me.

#1 Pineapple Express

Hilarious action comedy about a stoner and his dealer (played by Seth Rogen and James Franco, respectively) who have to work together after they find themselves in a huge mess because one of them witnesses a murder by a drug baron.

#2 Hot Tub Time Machine

I watched this not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is about four men that are transported back to their 80's teenhood. They then have to find a way back to the present without changing anything major in the past if they don't want their lives to change drastically in the present. Probably not a top tier comedy, but it was a good laugh anyway.

#3 Superbad

Funny comedy about two teenage friends (played by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera). If you want an idea what to expect from this, then I'd compare it to the American Pie series, but with less focus on the sex and more on the general teenage life/partying.

#4 Kick-Ass

A superhero comedy about a regular guy that wants to be a superhero. Has a decent amount of really funny scenes.

Hope this list helps you out a bit when looking for new movies to watch!

#3 Vampires Suck & Community (TV Series)

Vampires Suck

Wow. What a waste of my time.

Definitely not worth watching. I couldn't even finish this. I figured it'd be decent since Im into most comedies but this was just plain dumb. The humour was generic and there wasn't a single actual funny joke halfway through the movie, at which point I stopped watching.
If you want a good comedy film, there are much better alternatives, I'll blog about some better choices later. Hot tub time machine jumps to mind, for example.

Community

I've only discovered this TV series recently and I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. It combines pretty much every stereotype you'd expect in a comedy, yet comes up with original jokes and ways to portray them. I'm catching up to the second season now and my personal opinion is that the second season is even better than the first. Give it a shot if you're looking for a series to kill your time with!
